In 2025, Das Magazin sent me to Changchun to photograph Thorsten, who teaches at a university there.
He's a genuinely interesting person: a Marxist, a Mao scholar, a collector of Mao-era memorabilia, a university lecturer, a powerlifter, a boxer and a metalhead.
I spent two days documenting his life far from home, and we became good friends.
